Colorful autumn leaves are beautiful to behold – but they can be very hazardous to drivers. The Safety Council for Southeast Michigan reminds motorists that wet leaves on the road can be as slippery as ice. So how can a driver steer clear of collisions? Just as on an icy or rain click road slow down – increase your following distances. Going slowly will not prevent all skids. If you find your car skidding turn in the direction you want the car to go. This may require two or three counter moves. If your car is equipped with an anti locking braking system, remember:
Firmly depress the brake pedal |
Stay on the brakes. Don’t pump |
Steer where you want to go |
Watch out for Deer
Drivers in the suburbs and countryside of Michigan have an additional hazard to contend with. A large number of deer roam the roads because of seasonal migration and the encroachment of developments changes the availability of food. Earlier sunsets make deer and other animals harder to see. There were thousands of incidents last year and this in which deer were hit by cards and trucks. Be alert and be prepared to stop suddenly. Be especially wary when you see the signs warning of deer in the area.
Bridge Pavement Freeze
Frozen pavement on bridges often catch drivers unaware. As cold air swirls around bridges they can freeze over even when other roads do not. As soon as daily temperatures start dipping into the 30s, remember to slow down before crossing a bridge including freeway bridges.
